The population of Njom village, Bangem Sub Division, Kupe Muamenguba of the South West Region has been excited over the harvesting and arrival of new species of fish at Seme Fish Pond.
During the fish harvesting day that took place recently in the village, the Regent Chief of Njom, Elume Alexis Ebah expressed joy that they have harvested a good quantity of fish that has been shared in Njom and neighbouring villages.
Ebah described the fish project as successful and was hopeful that if adopted on a large scale, it will provide employment to youths and contribute to the development of the Sub Division.
Meanwhile Ngide Metuge Samuel, founder and promoter of the Youth Empowerment and Promotion, YEP which initiated the fish pond project, said the organization was setup in 2020 with a focus on community development.
He said the two fish ponds were setup under the banner of the Seme Stream Fish Project and the fishes where put in there in 28th of December 2022 sponsored by the US embassy in Yaounde. He said this is just part of the main project which is the stocking of fish in the Seme Stream.
“We started by stocking fish in the stream which covers six to seven villages and we expect that the fish will multiply in the days ahead we would like the population to give about two years so that the fishes can grow very big and we are equally encouraging sustainable fish harvesting which is to encourage the use of fishing hugs and not baskets.” Ngide revealed.
The promoter was optimistic that in the next two years the people of Bangem shall have enough fish in local markets to meet up with the protean need.
“We have just harvested tilapia, cat fish, carp fish and a fourth type which I recently brought called Kanga. Our wish is that we should have these species of fish throughout the year in our community.” He added and thanked the US Embassy for supporting the project.
Speaking to The Ultimate, Albert Nganje, Sub Divisional Delegate of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industry, Bangem expressed joy at the community project which is in line with the objectives of promoting fish farming by his ministry.
He said rearing of pigs, goats, horses and others domestic animals is highly successful in the sub division. He sadi the coming of fish farming for home consumption and business shall generate additional revenue to the population.
Nganje assured that the delegation of livestock is ready to accompany the population technically to see that this fish farming initiative grows in Bangem Sub Division.
