The Paramount Ruler of Bangem, Kupe Muanenguba Division, South West Region, HRH Nnane Nnoko Emmanuel has lamented that the population of Bangem has been betrayed, provoked and mocked following the last minute cancellation of Bangem from the International Banana-Plantain Festival.
Chief Nnane was speaking at his Palace in Bangem, November 29, 2023 when news of the canceled program reached the divisional headquarters of Kupe Muanenguba.
He said though he hasn’t seen any official program on the cancellation of Bangem from the highly mediatized event, it is big betrayal to them.
The paramount ruler stated that Bangem has manifested high degree of peace and if people think this is the time to provoke them, they leave it in the hands of the Head of State, President Paul Biya. “I know the attachment of my people to this country and our Head of State. We are very loyal to him. President Biya is a straight forward man and will be very angry with people who frustrate his mission in the field.” He regretted.
Chief Nnane was also bitter that farmers have not harvested their plantain for over two weeks, reserving them for exhibition at the plantain festival village at Paul Biya’s Stadium Bangem. He said plantain being perishable, farmers will have to dump it in the hands of unscrupulous plantain buyers, thereby incurring great financial lost. “Who is going to pay the farmers now? What type of disgrace is this? Why did they include Bangem in the program in the first place? We are now an embarrassment to our population. How do we face them?” The Chief asked rhetorically.
He said it is a shame to make empty promises to people every day. “If the festival cannot happen in Bangem, it means they have been telling us lies about the tarring of our roads too. What about the plantain processing factory that was supposed to even come to Bangem after the festival?” he further questioned.
He added that Bangem has the best specie of plantain in Cameroon, good for transformation into flour. “We wanted the entire nation and investors to come to Bangem and discover for themselves.” He added.
The Paramount Ruler regretted that it is ridiculous to organize a plantain festival and instead of visiting the highest producing plantain sector in Cameroon, Bangem, officials instead prefer a gala match in Limbe.
“Are we celebrating plantain festival or football festival? Has the football pitch in Limbe turns to a plantain pitch?” He further questioned.
“This same festival, the first edition took place in Ebolowa without any problem. I have taken pains to prepare my speech, multiply it and waiting for the festival. If it is true that the festival has been canceled in Bangem at the last second, we leave it in the hands of our living ancestors.” Chief Nnane cried.
Plantain Buyers Jubilates
While the population of Bangem is in agony on how to sell the tons of plantains reserved for the festival, buyers are jubilating everywhere because they will buy at extremely low prices.
Plantain Buyers Benefit from Canceled Festival in Bangem, Impose Prices on Farmers
“We shall be determining the prices of plantains to farmers. If they don’t sell at our price, then they should eat their plantains at Christmas. After all, a business man always waits for opportunity to make profit and once that opportunity is available, we grab it.” A plantain buyer revealed.
