The planned Elective Convention of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, has been postponed indefinitely, authorities of the political outfit announced Saturday.
Postponed due to the upcoming funeral of the party’s National Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi, the convention initially planned for July this year, may only be held at the close of the year, The Guardian Post has been hinted.
Discussions on the announced postponement of the Elective Convention and the forthcoming funeral of Ni John Fru Ndi, who passed away a fortnight ago, were at the front burner of discussions at a National Executive Committee, NEC meeting, held Saturday in Yaounde.
Chaired by SDF’s 1st National Vice President, Hon Joshua Osih, the gathering was the first ever SDF gathering since the departure of one of the party’s Founding Fathers and pioneer National Chieftain, Ni John Fru Ndi.
Discussions at the Yaounde meeting centred on plans to accord the late Ni John Fru Ndi a befitting burial, worthy of a man of his standing.
Speaking to reporters at the close of the executive meeting Saturday, Hon Joshua Osih explained that “Today’s meeting was essentially geared towards the funeral of our National Chairman. We had one point on the agenda which was looked at from different angles”.
“We needed to put in place working groups to be able to organise the funeral successfully. The meeting was essentially about the death of our Chairman, which is a very big preoccupation for all of us,” he added.
He then disclosed that: “The funeral will start on Thursday the 27th of July at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex, where we will have an ecumenical service…on the 28th of July, the corpse will be conveyed to Bamenda where we will have a rally at the Commercial Avenue Grandstand. From there, we will head to the Presbyterian Church Musang, where our Chairman was worshiping”.
“There will be an all-night wake at his Ntarinkon residence. On Saturday July, 29, we will have the burial in Baba II, his village. In Baba II, we will have an official funeral for our late Chairman…before he is laid to rest,” Osih added.
“I call on all NEC members to mobilise and put in all their energy and time to make sure that we have a successful funeral for our Chairman,” he urged.
Turning to the postponed Elective Convention, Osih explained that the decision followed a move by the Secretary General of the SDF, suspending all activities unrelated to the funeral of the party’s National Chairman.
“The convention was scheduled for the end of July. As you know, the Secretary General of the party sent out an internal note suspending all party activities that are not linked to the funeral of our National Chairman. We are postponing the convention until…I guess it will be around the month of October,” he disclosed.
