Thousands of workers who belong to the country’s second largest employer have been working for many years without regular pay, many others chaotically laid-off and some even killed during attacks by alleged separatist fighters.
Terrible management, alarming corruption and the Anglophone crisis have all contributed to bury what was a thriving state corporation and Cameroon’s second highest employer after the state.
The company represents one of the few remaining legacies of the pre-unitary republic and is endeared in the hearts of many.
The huge size of the CDC workforce and its mounting debt has scared even the state from bankrolling the state corporation which some experts say, “is already bankrupt as Yaoundé prioritizes other areas”.
Despite huge salary cuts, the company has struggled to pay its workers with thousands going for years without a penny and yet required to show up for work.
One CDC worker who works as security told fakopromote “We worked for more than two years without pay and yet we were obliged to show up for work, we had no choice because we didn’t want to lose our pension”
While Senior executives at the state corporation continue to enjoy their benefits with one director reportedly having 11 air conditioners installed on his small two bed room CDC house in Tiko, many thousand others can barely afford food on their table at the end of the month
Management has blamed the Anglophone crisis for the crisis but insiders say the company was already falling before the coming of the Anglophone crisis
