Popular Cameroonian pop singer, Melanie Ngoga, popularly known as Mimie, has opened up on internal struggles with depression and alcoholism prior to the release of her best selling hit, ‘Faya’.
In an interview on the program ‘Hall of Fame’ on Dash Television on Friday, she said the song was released during one of her most challenging moments.
She had been battling depression, alcoholism, and worst of all had no money to produce and release the song.
‘’I went through a lot while at Empire, there was a point where Pit Baccardi abandoned me all to myself, he said he doesn’t want to have anything to do with me. I had to struggle on my own.. I went into depression and resulted in consuming a lot of alcohol. People see us posting beautiful pictures and smiling on social media without knowing that we are dying behind closed doors,” she said.
“Empire didn’t spend a dime on Faya ft Locko. I remember begging Adah Akenji and Chuzih to pls help me because I didn’t have money to pay for the video and they did. When the video was ready, I then begged Pit to release it and God been so kind, the song became a hit. That was when Pit Barcardi redeveloped interest in me and I told him.. I want out. You can’t be with me only when the going is good. Though I appreciate everything he did for me,’’ she added.
The 32-year-old is one of the most popular female musicians in Cameroon, with over a million followers in Facebook.
‘Faya,’ released in August 2021, is her most popular song, with 8.4 million views on YouTube since it was released.
The song that featured popular Cameroonian singer, Locko, expresses her deep need for love and her desire to stay in love.
