According to a report published Tuesday evening by the Centre for Coordination of Public Health Emergency Operations (CCOUSP), already 6 health districts in the Central Region are on cholera epidemic alert.
Cholera is on the rise in the Centre, more precisely in the city of Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. In the period from March 27 to April 14, 2023, four new health districts were reported to be in an epidemic. These are the health districts of the Green City and Djoungolo in Yaoundé, as well as those of Mfou and Obala.
According to the figures revealed by the CCOUSP, during this period, 60 new cases of cholera, including 1 death, were reported in the Central and Coastal regions. In particular 42 cases including 1 death in the Central region, 18 cases in the Littoral region.
In a recent tweet by the Minister of Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie, He said,
“I invite the inhabitants of Yaoundé to be more vigilant and respect public health measures, because we continue to record many cases of cholera in our hospitals. Also, I congratulate and encourage health soldiers whose dedication prevents deaths.”
As of April 19, 2023, the epidemiological situation reports 88 reported cases and 05 deaths for a case fatality rate of 5.68%, “warned Minister Manaouda Malachi in a recent statement. The epidemic has spread to new health districts in Yaoundé, namely Nkolndongo and Biyem-Assi.
To contain the epidemic and prevent its spread to other regions, a surveillance system has been put on alert. In addition, the Ministry of Health is committed to raising awareness, disinfecting households and communities, distributing drinking water kits.
